The work of the gods are the weal and woe of mortals—on that much, theosophers and divilogians can agree. But less certain are the motives and intentions behind those works.

 Do the stars truly scribe some grand narrative in which we are humble players? Have the gods granted some hidden purpose to our lives, ones that bring glory to us and to them? Are our misfortunes fixed before our births, simply an occasion for divine beings to laugh at our impotence in the face of their own omnipotence?

 Or are our fates described by nothing more than the casual roll of an indifferent die?
